Watch: Teen’s message in a bottle travels 1,200 miles in two yrs
Jan. 20 (UPI) — A message in a bottle that a Washington state teenager dropped into the ocean whilst sailing in the South Pacific was located two several years later soon after floating 1,200 miles to Papua New Guinea.
Niki Nie, of Battle Ground, stated she was 17 decades aged when she and her household were being sailing in the South Pacific. On Jan. 8, 2019, she tossed a message in a bottle into the ocean to commemorate crossing the equator on the way to the Marshall Islands.
“We form of did it as a commemorative, ‘Hey. we’re crossing the equator’ and just for the reason that we needed to. Why not, let’s see what happens. It was kind of an adventure,” Nie told KGW-Television.
The bottle was uncovered two many years later on by Steven Amos, a ranger with the Conflict Island Conservation Initiative, who was cleaning litter from a beach on Panasesa Island, off the coast of Papua New Guinea.
“For it to land in Papua New Guinea was very wonderful mainly because we have so quite a few mates that nevertheless work there. So several connections, so numerous terrific memories,” Nie stated.
The team posted pics of Nie’s bottle on Fb, and the post reached her in hrs.
“As much as it receiving discovered by a conservation team,” Nie mentioned, “I have to say at initial I was a minimal responsible. I was like, ‘Oh no, I most likely shouldn’t have thrown a bottle in,’ but I figured it was beneficial that it was glass.”
The Conflict Island Conservation Initiative has invited Nie to appear stop by the Conflict Islands and learn much more about the group. Nie reported she is hoping to make the journey in the close to long term.
