Disneyland Resort ends annual passholder program

In another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Disneyland Resort last week announced that it has discontinued its long-running annual passport program, effective immediately.

Passholders who held a valid pass when the Resort closed on March 14, 2020, will automatically receive a pro-rated refund of their pass. The change affects the Disneyland Resort only; the Walt Disney World annual pass program remains unchanged.

In a statement, Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock said:

“We want to thank our Annual Passholders for their understanding during this closure period. Due to the continued uncertainty of the pandemic and limitations around the reopening of our California theme parks, we will be issuing appropriate refunds for eligible Disneyland Resort Annual Passports and sunsetting the current program. We are currently developing new membership offerings that will utilize consumer insights to deliver choice, flexibility and value for our biggest fans.”

Passholders were notified of this change via email, and you can also view the text of the letter at a new website Disney has established with information about the refund process. It includes information about many situations, including refunds for unactivated annual passports and Premier Passholders (which provided admission into both Disneyland and Walt Disney World parks).

While this announcement is a blow to Disney fans around the country, the decision was almost inevitable. Disney officials never speak of attendance numbers (and even in announcing the end of the current annual pass program, they declined to state how many passholders the Resort actually had), but it’s estimated that around one million people bought annual passports each year. The sheer number of annual passholders was a factor in nearly every operational decision at the Disneyland Resort, from how much parking capacity was needed, to how the opening days of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge were managed.

Disney created many exclusive merchandise collections for various annual passholder promotions. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

During a conference call with reporters, Potrock said that, while the Resort still hasn’t gotten any guidance on when the Disneyland theme parks will be allowed to reopen, he expects “we’ll be opening in a very different and new way, using a reservation system.”

Based on guidance issued by the state for other business sectors, as well as the tentative reopening guidelines proposed for theme parks, it’s certain that capacity restrictions will be part of any reopening plan. The existing passholder base would likely overwhelm whatever limited capacity the Resort is able to operate under.

Disney has taken several steps to change the annual passholder program over the past few years—by raising prices, eliminating some pass types, and most recently introducing a passport with few blockout days, but which required an advance reservation to use. But if the company had ever wished to completely overhaul the program, the current pandemic provided the perfect opportunity.

During the call, Potrock said, “If there is a silver lining in this pandemic, it’s the ability to take a step back and look at the new normal, whatever that will be, and begin to create a new program that takes into account all the things that are important to our guests.”

In creating the new “membership” program, Disney is conducting extensive research among current and former passholders, day guests and vacation planners to determine which features are most important to them. Potrock said that “nothing is off the table” when it comes to the new program, and that it will be based on the feedback received from guests. Park officials do not have a timeline for introducing the new program, but said they hope it will be ready at whatever time the theme parks are allowed to reopen in California.

However, Potrock acknowledged that the end of the current program will strike an emotional blow to the annual passholder base, many of whom (including this writer) have had their passes for decades. He said that annual passholders are “our biggest fans, our most important fans, a group we want to put our arms around and show them the love.”

Towards that end, Disney will continue some passholder benefits for some time, including merchandise and food & beverage discounts in Downtown Disney and Buena Vista Street. Disney is also increasing the merchandise discount on Buena Vista Street to 30% from January 18 through February 25. Over the weekend, Disneyland also began giving out promotional Disneyland 65th Anniversary car magnets to Annual Passholders who made a purchase in Downtown Disney, likely a souvenir of a passholder promotion which was canceled due to the pandemic.

While this is definitely the end of an era, it’s not the end of the story. Potrock said, “We can’t wait to embark on the next chapter of the Disneyland Resort as soon as we possibly, possibly can.”

Knott’s Berry Farm and Universal extend their annual pass programs

The day after Disneyland ended its current annual passholder program, two local theme parks made announcements about their own programs.

Knott’s Berry Farm issued an update on Friday, assuring its season passholders that their passport program was not going anywhere. Knott’s had previously let passholders know that their 2020 passports would be valid through the end of 2021 once the theme parks reopen. Now Knott’s has committed to a day-for-day extension into 2022 for every day in 2021 that the theme parks are closed.

January 15, 2021 Update

To our Season Passholders,

We want to thank all of our Knott’s Berry Farm Season Passholders for your continued patience and support during this unprecedented time. Knowing our closures have disrupted a new year, we wanted to share some important updates to the 2020 and 2021 Season Passholder benefits:

  • As announced last year, 2020 and 2021 Season Passes and purchased Season Pass Add-On Products (if applicable) will be valid for all of the 2021 season, once the park opens.
  • Additionally, we will also be offering a Day for Day Extension. For every day that the park is closed in 2021, we will extend season passes for the same amount of days in 2022. This also includes Season Pass Add-On Products (if applicable).

Our Season Passholders remain very important to us and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back to enjoy all Knott’s Berry Farm has to offer.

Sincerely,

Jon Storbeck

Vice President & General Manager

Knott’s Berry Farm

The announcement came from Jon Storbeck, the general manager of Knott’s Berry Farm. Storbeck spent a 32-year career with Disney, and was the vice president of Disneyland Park from 2005-2014. He retired from the company in 2015, before joining Knott’s Berry Farm in 2016. Knott’s passholders can get more information on the theme park website.

Universal Studios Hollywood also chimed in on Friday with a message to their annual passholders.

Universal says it has put its season and annual pass programs on hold, and passholders will automatically receive an extension for the remaining duration of their pass term, once the theme park reopens.

Sea World is still selling annual passports, and says it will reopen under the guidelines for zoos as soon as the state of California again allows zoos to operate. Customers who purchase their passes now receive an extension for the number of days SeaWorld San Diego is temporarily closed. Sea World has gone to a reservation system, where all ticket holders must make a reservation before visiting the theme park.

The San Diego Zoo and San Diego Wild Animal Park are also still selling annual memberships, which will be extended based on the length of the current closure. These two parks will reopen under the guidelines for under the guidelines for zoos when allowed by the state of California.

Six Flags Magic Mountain is a seasonal park with a monthly membership program. The company is offering members who stay active and continue their payments a free membership level upgrade through the end of 2022, plus an extension of their membership for the number of months the theme park was closed.

Star Wars Trading Post to get new home

The mystery of the abandoned temple has been solved, and now we know why Disney had filed those building permits to partition off the retail store from the restaurant space inside the vacant former Rainforest Cafe spot in Downtown Disney. This weekend the Disney Parks Blog announced that the Star Wars Trading Post will move into a new home, “inspired by a hidden jungle Resistance base.”

The location won’t be that hard to find when it opens, as it will feature Rey’s speeder parked on display outside the entrance. That probably explains why the Asian Street Eats truck had to vacate its home outside the former restaurant, but does not answer the question of whether the truck will return somewhere else in Downtown Disney when the latest stay-at-home orders expire in California and outdoor dining is once again permitted.

With this move also comes news that Wonderground Gallery, which was displaced to make room for the Star Wars Trading Post back, will finally reopen in Downtown Disney. However, we note that the announcement makes mention of housewares, headbands and Spirit Jerseys along with the “unique collection of art, gifts and collectibles,” so it’s a good bet that Wonderground won’t look exactly as it did when it closed last year.

CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet

Registration is now open for CHOC’s first-ever Virtual Walk in the Park in early 2021 to raise funds for CHOC Children’s Hospital. While things definitely look a little different this year, Team MousePlanet will return for our 13th consecutive walk to help this outstanding local charity.

Goofy, CHOC CEO Kim Cripe, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Josh D’Amaro, Disneyland Resort Ambassador Rafa Barron, and Pluto greet participants at the start of the 2019 CHOC Walk in the Park. MousePlanet file photo

Thanks to the efforts and generosity of our readers, Team MousePlanet has raised over $82,000 for CHOC since 2008. We invite MousePlanet readers, friends, and family members near and far to support Team MousePlanet for this event, either by joining the team, or by making a donation to one of our registered participants.

On a personal note, I became involved with the CHOC Walk over 20 years ago, long before I was a parent. In the years since, I have gone from being a volunteer to serving at various times as a team captain, a prize sponsor and a media partner.

Now I’m a CHOC parent. This time it’s personal. You can read more about my CHOC journey on my event website.

Also keep watching for ways to support Team MousePlanet through eBay for Charity auctions. We will be listing items received from press events, with 100% of the proceeds going directly to CHOC.

2021-2022
  • CHOC Walk in the Park – the next Walk will be a virtual event in early 2021. Registration is now open.
  • Dapper Day (unofficial event) – Spring Outing to Disneyland scheduled for Sunday, April 12. More information on the event website.
  • 2022 D23 Expo –  September 9-11, 2022 at the Anaheim Convention Center

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of January 6, 2019.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
